Reads

This month, I read Beyond Anxiety by Martha Beck. The main takeaway was that creativity spirals are the opposite of anxiety spirals, so to decrease anxiety, lean into creativity.

The Good: Doesn't include the same old anxiety tips you hear over and over. Instead, most of the book is focused on actionable tips for increasing creativity. It's a quick, engaging read with clear takeaways.

The Bad: Not necessarily bad, but if you're not a fan of woo, this book progressively goes that direction. I'd recommend skipping the last two chapters if that's not your thing.

Overall, I would recommend it if you're looking for new ways to address your anxiety.

As someone who regularly conducts workplace surveys, I found this episode of Freakonomics fascinating:

"In 2023, the N.F.L. players’ union conducted a workplace survey that revealed clogged showers, rats in the locker room — and some insights for those of us who don’t play football."

Last week, someone called me out. They noticed I was working on a Sunday night and pointed out the contradiction: I regularly advocate for healthy work practices, yet here I was… answering emails on a weekend. To them, I was sending a dangerous message. “You’re telling people to rest,” they said, “while secretly doing the opposite to get ahead.” I paused when I read that. Not just because it was entirely wrong, but because it missed something deeper. Something I wish more people understood...

Back in 2021, I went to put in my notice at my full-time job and came out with "entrepreneurial leave". It gives ambitious employees the chance to explore new ideas without severing ties with your company, and builds lasting loyalty in the process.
